Starting to write about extremism

I've been sitting with an idea for a while now, a book about extremist ideology in the 21st century. It's still early, more notes and structure than finished pages, but I wanted to write something here about why this topic and not something else.

Most of my work lives in trying to understand systems from the inside, how a model reaches a conclusion, how a complex process produces a specific outcome. Extremism is that same question applied to something much harder to study cleanly. What actually pulls someone toward an ideology. What the process looks like from the inside rather than from the outside looking in with judgment already formed.

I don't think this book will have easy answers, and I'm wary of writing something that oversimplifies a genuinely complicated subject just to make it more readable. That tension, between clarity and honesty, is probably going to shape a lot of how this gets written.
